@ Grailed

A new feature in the Grailed app that let sellers proactively send private offers to interested buyers in order to close deals faster. The feature addressed marketplace inefficiencies, shaped the design system for Offers, and drove a measurable lift in sales across the marketplace.

Context

The Seller Offer feature came out of a company-wide push to grow Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) across the marketplace. As part of the Seller Squad, I led research and design exploration that resulted in a new Seller Offers feature for Web and iOS.

Research and Hypothesis

To move fast, I interviewed our most experienced sellers and frequent buyers about the state of the marketplace and what felt missing. I also ran competitive audits of similar marketplaces to identify capabilities we were lacking.

Backed by both qualitative and competitive research, my product manager and I focused on the following hypothesis: sellers weren't getting enough feedback on buyer interest to help them price their items competitively.

Defining scope, phasing out work, and creating testable versions

My favorite part of this project was introducing Story Mapping to the team: a lightweight way to collaborate on scope and phasing with Product and Engineering leads. This workshop-style exercise helped us break the ideal product down into shippable versions, so we could learn as we went without over-investing upfront.

Informing Sellers of Interest

One requirement I pushed for was reminding sellers of interested buyers through lightweight, always-accessible in-product notifications. This wasn't the only way to create an offer, but it served as an important nudge for sellers who weren't as active on the platform.

Lightweight, Informative, and Automative Userflows

As part of my design strategy, I wanted the UI to feel lightweight but informative, helping sellers price offers for buyers who were interested but hesitant to buy.

I also advocated for an Auto-Offer feature (not part of the initial rollout) that sellers could opt into, automatically sending offers to new buyers who "Liked" the item going forward.

A Buyer Flow that Reduced Spam

One concern was turning off buyers with unwanted notifications from this feature. Initially, we sent all offers to buyers who liked the item. A follow-up feature let buyers also opt in for items they were "Watching," which led to fewer complaints and better insight into buyer intent.

Updating Offer Form Design

This design effort also helped update the older Buyer-Initiated Offer UI, making it more streamlined and informative for buyers.
